Salem High school intruder bond hearing rescheduled due to ‘mental health’

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man accused of taking a hatchet into Salem High School won’t be in court until Thursday.

Twenty-five-year-old Kirk Cowart was supposed to face a judge Tuesday morning for a bond hearing, but Cowart’s attorney said he was not ready to move forward with the case.

His attorney blamed mental health issues. Cowart was unable to communicate or cooperate with his pre-trial officer and defense attorney.

The Salem grad will have to stay in jail for now. WAVY’s Jason Marks interviewed him last week after police said they found him sitting at the school auditorium with a hatchet.

Cowart’s trial starts in November.
