CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — The Sears store and Sears Auto Center at the Chesapeake Square Mall will close to the public in mid-January.
Shopper Reggie Davis told WAVY.com, “it’s unfortunate, but good tools, good tire deals sometimes, but you know, the big stores and chains are taking over. It’s all about the better price, I guess.”
Cheryl Soladay, another shopper, said, “my husband’s more into Sears than I am. We’re usually, if we’re price comparing, we go to Sears first then go from there, because they have the price watch guarantee.”
The store located at 4200 Portsmouth Blvd. in Chesapeake will begin its liquidation sale Oct. 31.
Director of Corporate Communications at Sears Howard Riefs, said, “The closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model.”
The store currently has 82 employees. Sears said those associates who are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.
