NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News man is behind bars after police say he robbed and assaulted his girlfriend in May.

Last week, officers arrested 48-year-old Lee Marvin Stilley, who was served direct indictments for robbery, carjacking and destruction of property, according to Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department.

The charges stem from an incident on May 4 when Stilley’s girlfriend gave him a ride to 76th Street and Chestnut Avenue. Police say when the woman stopped the vehicle, Stilley grabbed her keys and punched her several times when she tried to take them back.

The woman got out of the vehicle, trying to escape Stilley, and he demanded her cell phone and assaulted her a second time, McPherson said. Stilley then drove away in the victim’s vehicle.

The incident happened a little after 3 p.m., and police recovered the vehicle, which had been damaged, later that day.

Stilley was arrested around 4:45 p.m. last Thursday in the 3400 block of Jefferson Avenue. Not only was he served the indictments for the May incident, but he was also charged with possession of a schedule I/II substance when drug paraphernalia was found in his possession, Holley said.
