NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A firefighter collapsed while working a fire in Norfolk Sunday night.

He was taken away in a stretcher on the scene. Norfolk Fire spokesman Julian Williamson said the firefighter has non-life threatening injuries.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue units were called to an apartment fire in the 700 block of West 27th Street, just around 9:57 p.m. The flames filled both floors of the two-story apartment. It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Williamson said the structure was vacant and had been unoccupied. A fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
