NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach man pleaded guilty Friday to distributing heroin to a man who later overdosed and died. He now faces a minimum of 20 years in prison.
In late October 2013, Stephen Ron Martin II received a text from Steven Bradley Nichols who wanted to buy a gram, according to statement of facts filed with the plea agreement.Martin, 20, purchased the illicit drug from a dealer and then sold it to Nichols. After the sale, the two Virginia Beach residents texted about how to use heroin and how much to take.
The messages continued into the night until Nichols, 42, stopped responding. Martin went by Nichols apartment to check in, but no one answered. He could hear Nichols’ phone ringing inside.
Two days later, Oct. 29, officers found Nichols dead in his home. An autopsy confirmed that Nichols had injected heroin and subsequently died as a result of acute heroin intoxication.
Martin was indicted on Aug. 21 in a superseding indictment that charged him with one count of distribution of heroin and one count of distribution of heroin resulting in death, according to authorities. he is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 28, 2015.
