Punishments given to 3 leaders of Norfolk-based destroyer

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Three former leaders of a Norfolk-based destroyer received non-judicial punishments on Thursday.

Former commanding officer of the USS James E. Williams, Cmdr. Curtis Calloway, was found in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, specifically Article 92, Dereliction of Duty. The destroyer’s former executive officer and prospective commanding officer, Cmdr. Ed Handley, was found in violation of the same UCMJ article.

Command Master Chief Travis Biswell was also found in violation of Article 92, as well as Article 134, drunk and disorderly conduct.

Cmdr. Heidi Haskins will take command of the USS James E. Williams, as Calloway, Handley and Biswell have begun temporary assignments at Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic.

The destroyer and her crew are deployed to the 6th Fleet area of operations.
