NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — One person has been displaced after a fire at an eight-unit apartment building Thursday evening.

More than 20 firefighters responded to the 7600 block of Newport Avenue just before 6 p.m. when a resident reported a neighbor’s apartment was on fire, according to Chief William Tull with Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Only one unit was affected by the fire. The person who lives in the neighboring apartment called 911 after hearing the fire alarm and noticing smoke coming from a crawlspace, Tull said.

The fire was controlled by 6:20 p.m.

The apartment resident was not home at the time of the fire. Tull said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

No one was injured, but the resident of the affected apartment has been displaced.
