Child is NC’s first reported flu death of this season

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed Thursday an elementary school student from the Triangle region of the state has died from complications from the flu.

It is the first flu-associated death for this season, which runs from October until May.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family on their loss,” Dr. Robin Cummings, the state’s health director, said in a statement. “We hope that making people aware of this tragic case will encourage preventative measures and remind everyone that it is not too early to be vaccinated. We are very early in the flu season, and we expect to see flu activity increase in the coming weeks and months.”
The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone six months and older get a yearly vaccine.
North Carolina reported 107 influenza-associated deaths last season.
NC DHHS will be releasing weekly flu numbers at: www.flu.nc.gov.
