NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Family and friends gathered in Newport News Thursday night to remember a man who was stabbed to death earlier this week.
Police found 19-year-old Taiwo Douglas-Wells injured around 4 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Newsome Park Elementary School. He was transported from the school on Marshall Avenue to a local hospital, where he passed away.
Detectives say before the stabbing, Wells and two others were walking through the school playground when they came upon someone else. Wells was stabbed during a heated conversation.
His friends and family lit candles and shared stories at the elementary school Thursday night. His mother is using the tragedy to send an urgent message to local youth.
“We need to stop the violence between young people. The violence has to stop,” she said. “If we don’t stop killing off each other, then there’s never going to be another generation to go on, and we have to learn to love each other unconditionally.”
She and Wells’ father also sent a message to their son’s killer: “They took our son. Something’s going to have to happen, and the person has to come forward. The police shouldn’t have to look for you.”
