Chesapeake crews battle shopping center fire

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Great Bridge area shopping center was damaged by fire Wednesday evening.

Fire crews were called to 701 Battlefield Boulevard North at 7:25 p.m., according to Captain Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department. At the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from a storage room at the back of the shopping center.

The fire was controlled by 7:40 p.m. Saunders said a fire sprinkler system helped firefighters keep the flames from spreading outside the storage room. However, two adjoining stores did receive minor smoke damage.

There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
