Norfolk council approves development for 35th St. corridor

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Big changes are coming to one Norfolk neighborhood that promise to put it on the map.

City Council just approved a multi-million-dollar re-development project for the 35th Street corridor. It’s called Newport Plaza.

The development is part of the Build a Better Block program. Hanson Company will build 52 new apartments, a 5,000-square foot restaurant, and will convert the old theater on 35th into a new entertainment center.

Many of the older, historic buildings around 35th Street and Newport Avenue will be preserved and restored.

The cost: around $6 million.
