Sussex wrong-way crash causes fatality

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police is investigating a Sussex County crash that resulted in fatality Monday evening.

Just after 5:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer and a 2002 Cadillac crashed on Route 40 (Sussex Drive), about a mile east of Route 626 (Court House Road), according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

Virginia State Police identified the driver of the Cadillac as Ronald Wayne Jones. According to state troopers, Jones was traveling westbound on the eastbound lanes when he struck the tractor-trailer head on.

The collision caused the tractor-trailer, which was hauling diesel fuel, to catch fire. The driver of the tractor survived, with non-life threatening injuries.

Jones died on scene. Police said it remains unknown if alcohol played a factor.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews had to shut down Route 40 while the roadway was cleared. All lanes are now reopened.
