KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — Kill Devil Hills police say a man accidentally shot someone Thursday morning.
Around 11:50 a.m., officers responded to the 1200 block of 7th Avenue for a report of a man who had been shot, according to Sgt. J.C. Towler, Jr. with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department.
At the scene, police found the victim being cared for by the shooter, a 38-year-old man from Kill Devil Hills.
Officers learned the shooter had been cleaning a Century Arms 7.64 rifle in his residence, and did not realize there was a live round in the weapon. Towler said he accidentally fired the gun, and the bullet traveled through a wall and outside, where it struck the victim in the lower back.
The victim was an 18-year-old man from Southern Shores. He was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Towler said.
Towler said the district attorney’s office will decided if charges are appropriate in this case.
