HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – An argument over stolen tennis shoes devolved into gunfire Wednesday afternoon, and now police are looking for the man who tried to steal the footwear.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, Eric Paul Cummings Jr. forced a 14-year-old boy to hand over his sneakers in Hampton implying to the teenager that he carried a weapon, according to authorities. When the victim’s father found out, he went searching for Cummings at the intersection of W. Queen St. and LaSalle Avenue – where the robbery happened. The father, 36, saw Cummings, 19, holding the shoes and talking with another man.
He then grabbed the footwear and argued with Cummings, who lives in the 100 block of Wilderness Road. When he climbed into his car, the other suspect with Cummings unloaded multiple rounds into the vehicle as the father and son fled the area. Neither of them were hurt, according to police.
Cummings has been charged with one count of robbery. The other suspect hasn’t been identified. Officers said there’s not enough information on him to release anything as of now.
The two men are wanted for the robbery and attempted maiming, the release stated.
