Port authority, Ghent residents meet over truck traffic hours

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The fight over truck traffic on Hampton Boulevard continued Tuesday night in Norfolk.

The Virginia Port Authority wants to extend the hours tractor-trailers can drive on the already busy street. So, executives met with members of Ghent and West Ghent neighborhoods to talk about it.

Right now tractor-trailers are only allowed on Hampton Blvd. from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The port authority wants those hours extended to 7 p.m.

“The hours that are in place now came about through a collaborate effort in 2007 between all of the interested parties. We want to know what has changed since that outstanding effort,” said Dan Neumann of the West Ghent Civic League. ” … all of the sudden the port wants extended hours.”

Tuesday night’s discussion started at 7 p.m. at W.H. Taylor Elementary School on West Princess Anne Road in West Ghent.
