SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A driver was transported to the hospital after crashing into a crane that was traveling across three lanes of traffic Monday morning, Suffolk Police said.
Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue arrived on the scene of the crash along eastbound Route 58, near Welch Parkway and the SPSA Landfill, shortly after 7:30 a.m.
Suffolk Police said preliminary investigation revealed the crane was traveling across three lanes of traffic when a passing vehicle struck the crane.
The female driver was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.
Two lanes of eastbound Route 58 were briefly closed following the accident; the far-left lane, as well as the crossover to the landfill due to the spill of diesel fuel from the ruptured fuel tank of the crane. This portion of the roadway reopened shortly before noon.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
