Sailboat runs aground in Hampton

Report It/Lyle Easley

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A 30-foot sailboat ran aground near Buckroe Beach Monday afternoon.

The boat owner was working on mechanical issues with the boat in the water when he decided to go to shore in a dingy and leave the boat in the water, according to Assistant Chief Jeffrey Pereira with the Hampton Fire Department.

The boat got loose from its anchor and washed ashore. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified because it was a navigational issue and because the boat was about 200 yards from shore.

At this time, the boat is on shore near Bayfront Place and Salt Ponds.
