NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The only Virginia class submarine named after a person has been christened in Newport News.
Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted a christening ceremony Saturday night in Newport News for the submarine John Warner (SSN 785). which is named after former U.S. Senator John Warner.
Warner retired in 2009, after serving 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
The submarine John Warner honors the senator’s years of service in the Navy and Marine Corps. He served as Secretary of the Navy before entering politics in 1978.
Warner served half of his Senate career as either the chair or ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
During the ceremony, U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the sub will be homeported in Norfolk. The submarine has enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare enhancements.
