HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Three boaters caught in an afternoon storm Thursday were rescued by the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue.

Around 4:30 p.m., rescue crews learned the boaters were trapped underneath the East Mercury Boulevard bridge that leads to Fort Monroe, due to the storm. Their 14-foot jon boat overturned, according to Assistant Chief Jeffrey Pereira.

At the scene, a fire officer with a flotation device was lowered by rope into the water and gave flotation devices to two of the boaters. The third boater used a cooler to float his way to shore.

“Boaters should always have flotation devices for each occupant on the vessel as well as flashlights or a whistle to be used as a signaling device,” Pereira said in a release.

No injuries were reported.
