Chain-reaction crash involves 9 vehicles

One injured in head-on collision

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk police say nine vehicles were involved in a crash along Portsmouth Boulevard Thursday, including a police cruiser.

Just after 5 p.m., emergency communications received a 911 call about a chain-reaction vehicle crash on Portsmouth Boulevard (Route 58) at the Wilroy Road exit, according to Tim Kelly with Suffolk police.

Police and fire-rescue crews responded to the location and learned six vehicles were involved in the crash. But then, as an additional Suffolk police cruiser was approaching the scene around 5:25 p.m., a van crashed into the police vehicle from behind, which then hit an 18-wheeler.

That brought the total number of vehicles involved to nine, according to Kelly.

The Suffolk officer was not injured, but two other people were transported to Sentara Obici Hospital for minor injuries.

Part of Route 58 was closed while the scene was cleared. All lanes have been reopened.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
