VDOT speaks out about work zone incidents

VDOT on work zone safety conference

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — More than two dozen work zone incidents prompted a response from the Virginia Department of Transportation.

10 On Your Side attended VDOT’s safety conference on Tuesday, where it was said the majority of incidents happened along a well traveled section of Hampton Roads: the I-64/I-264 corridor. That’s where crews are working on a project to smooth out the road.

WAVY.com talked to one worker about how bad traffic has gotten in the area during construction.

“As a contractor, the last thing you want to hear is a phone call at night from the job site where one or several of our workers have been killed,” said Andrew Curtis of Curtis Contracting.

In the past four months, there have been more than 26 incidents in that area of the highway.
