Hampton head coach unhappy about Wilder’s assessment of first game

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Meeting with the television media after his team’s 41-28 win over Hampton University on Saturday, Old Dominion University head coach Bobby Wilder said his team made “far too many mistakes in all three phases,” and said it was an overall “poor performance” by his team.

Hampton’s new head man Connell Maynor believed his team had a little something to do with that, and felt Wilder should’ve acknowledged the Pirates a little more than he did.

“The reason (ODU) played poorly, or didn’t play as well as he expected was because…people expected them to blow us out. And they didn’t because we didn’t play as bad as they thought we were going to play,” said Maynor on Tuesday, “I just thought (Wilder) should’ve given my team more credit than what he did.”

To be fair, Wilder did say at his Monday press conference that Hampton “kept fighting and cut it to 41 to 28, and we had to make some good stops on defense.”

The Monarchs now head to Raleigh, NC to face North Carolina State University, while the Pirates host the College of William & Mary in their home-opener on Saturday.
