Fundraiser held in Va. Beach for tornado victims

Fundraiser for Eastern Shore tornado victims

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach on Friday was the scene of a show of support for victims of a recent tornado.

Lord Balatbat, Lolibeth Ortega, and 14-year-old Lhearndrew died when a tornado ripped through Cherrystone Family Camground last month. The couple’s two daughters were injured in the storm, but survived.

On Friday night, people gathered for a dinner-dance at the Philippine Cultural Center. It was a fundraiser to help the two girls, who are now without parents or a brother.

“That is one of the beauties of the Philippine culture. If a certain family or individual needs some help, we always try to find meaning to get together and help the person or the family,” said an attendee of the event.

The two girls, ages six and 11, were transported from the Eastern Shore after the storm and spent four days in a local hospital. The money raised Friday night will help pay for their medical bills and education.
