NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police arrested a man Thursday who is suspected of killing a man during a fight this past weekend.

Detectives took 37-year-old Micheal Henry Perry of Hampton into custody, charging him with first degree murder in connection with the death of 59-year-old Gregory Sanford, according to Holly McPherson with the NNPD.

An investigation indicates Perry and Sanford did not know each other when they got into an argument Saturday evening. Police say the fight got physical, and around 8:45 p.m. two nearby officers were alerted to the situation. The officers were directed to the backyard of a home, where they found Sanford lying on the ground with visible signs of trauma.

Sanford was taken to a hospital, where he died Monday night.

McPherson said right now investigators are not sure what the argument between Sanford and Perry was about.
