Shooting victim runs into nearby apartment to call police

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police are investigating a mid-afternoon shooting in Newport News.

According to police spokeswoman Holly McPherson, the call came in at 2:45 p.m. about a gunshot victim in the 300 block of Deputy Lane, near Courthouse Green.

A 22-year-old York County man was shot in the leg.

McPherson said the victim told officers he was hanging out in the area, when all of a sudden he was hit; he didn’t know how he got shot or who shot him. He ran into an apartment where he knew people and they called police. His injury is not life-threatening.

Witnesses told investigators they heard a shot and saw people running.

There are no suspects or motive at this time.
