NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A Newport News man is facing charges after hospital staff alerted police of a possible child abuse case.
Medical personnel immediately contacted police August 21 after they observed what they believed to be signs of abuse to a 6-year-old boy. Police say Eric Sellers, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, brought him to the emergency room.
An investigation revealed the child received bruising and an injury to one of his lungs while in Sellers’ care, according to police spokesperson Holly McPherson. She said Sellers was also watching the child’s 5-year-old sister while their mother was at work.
On August 25, detectives obtained a warrant for felony child abuse. Eric Sellers turned himself in the next day.
