Newport News man dies two days after assault

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A 59-year-old man has died from injuries he received during a fight and police are seeking information about a suspect.

Saturday, around 8:45 p.m., Newport News police say someone approached two officers at the intersection of 32nd Street and Roanoke Avenue to tell them about a fight in the 1100 block of 33rd Street. The officers were directed to the backyard of a home, where they found a man lying on the ground. According to police, the man had visible signs of trauma.

The victim, Gregory Sanford, was taken to the hospital, where he died Monday night.
