Norfolk humane officer hospitalized after dog attack

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The owner of a pack of pit bulls in Norfolk is facing charges after the dogs attacked three people this week.

Manuel Lopez was a victim of the first attack, on Tuesday, and showed 10 On Your Side the wounds he suffered. He was near his home on Wedgefield Avenue, near Ingleside Road, when he saw the pit bulls going after a smaller dog.

“The owner grabbed his dog and [the pit bulls] started attacking him, because he had the dog in his hands,” Lopez said. “I tried to help and move the dogs away from them, and that’s when they started attacking me.”

Then on Wednesday, as the dogs’ owner was voluntarily surrendering them to the Animal Control Center on Saber Road, one of the pit bulls attacked again. When the owner opened his car door, one of the dogs tried to run away. A humane officer was able to leash the dog, but it spun around and attacked her.

The officer was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with bite injuries to the face and leg that were not life-threatening.

Charges for dangerous dogs and nuisance animals are pending against the owner for both attacks.
