Humane Officer hospitalized after dog attack

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk Humane Officer was hospitalized Wednesday after being attacked by a dog at an Animal Control Center.

According to Norfolk Police, the officer was at the Animal Control Center located at 5585 Saber Rd. helping someone who was surrendering four pit bulls. The dogs had attacked another dog a day before.

Police said as the owner opened his car door, one of the dogs tried to run away. The Humane Officer was able to get the dog on a leash, but it spun around and bit the officer in the face and leg.

The Humane Officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Charges are pending for “dangerous dogs, and nuisance animals” against the owner.
