Same suspect wanted in 3 Norfolk assaults

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk detectives are urgently requesting the public’s help in finding a man who they believe assaulted three different women in the Ghent area over a period of two weeks.

On August 9, a woman told Norfolk police she had been sexually assaulted about a week prior while jogging in the 2100 block of Hampton Boulevard. She was near the railroad overpass when she said a white man in his mid to late 20’s grabbed her and assaulted her before she was able to escape and run away.

The same man is suspected in another sexual assault on August 10 around 7:30 p.m. The female victim said she was walking her dog in the area of York Street and Brambleton Avenue when the suspect approached her and asked if he could pet her dog. That’s in the Freemason neighborhood.

The woman told police that as the man came closer, he grabbed her and sexually assaulted her. She was able to fight off the man and run away.

The third sexual assault happened August 8 near the intersection of Colley Avenue and Brambleton Avenue. The victim said she was approached by a white man in his mid to late 20’s and assaulted before she could fight him off. She ran, and the man followed and assaulted her a second time near the railroad overpass in the 2100 block of Hampton Boulevard.

“Any crime is concerning, especially with these where he has become more brazen with the acts,” said Norfolk Police Officer Daniel Hudson. “He is doing it during the day and doing it in locations where there are a lot of people.”

Police say none of the victims required medical attention.

All of the assaults happened in the Ghent area of Norfolk. This is near Eastern Virginia Medical School, which sent out an alert to those on campus Tuesday about a possible sighting of the suspect.

According to Blair Holloway with EVMS, a person matching the suspect’s description was spotted by sanitation workers Tuesday morning at Mowbray Arch and Pembroke Avenue. The sighting was reported to public safety and police.

EVMS Police and Public Safety provide escorts for those in the EVMS community — call 446-5199 to request and escort.

“We’re asking people to be vigilant on what they are doing,” Hudson said. “They should know their surroundings and be paying attention to who is around them.”

Detectives say the victims’ descriptions of the suspect were very similar in all three cases: he’s described to be about 5’8″ tall, have a medium build, bushy sandy brown or blonde hair, and bushy facial hair (especially in the goatee area).

During the first incident, the victim said the suspect was wearing a New England Patriots football jersey. During the second incident he was wearing a royal blue track suit with white stripes. And he was wearing a blue and green horizontal stripe shirt, with skinny blue jeans during the last assault.

Norfolk police ask that if you know anything about these incidents or see anything suspicious in the area, to call either 911 or the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Police received surveillance video of a man near Brambleton Avenue, near where one of the assaults happened. Police say the man is not the suspect, but may have information that could help the investigation, and they’d like to talk to him.

You can watch the video in the media player above, and if you are this person or if you know who this person is, police want to hear from you.
