Man charged with assaulting NN officer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police say they arrested a man for assaulting an officer on Friday.

Around 10:20 p.m., police say 39-year-old James Diggs was riding a bicycle without a light on a sidewalk in the first block of Cedar Avenue. He was also wearing a ski mask and bandanna over his face.

Officers told Diggs to stop, but he didn’t and instead accelerated, according to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department. Then officers saw Diggs throw a loaded handgun on the ground.

Diggs was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, assault on law enforcement, wearing a mask in public, reckless handling of a firearm, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, riding a bike on a sidewalk, and riding a bike without a light at night.
