Local family raises money for suicide prevention

Suicide Prevention Fundraisesr

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – It’s never easy to talk about suicide. That discussion has been front and center after the death of comedian Robin Williams.

The parents of John Mercer know the pain of suicide. The 14-year-old took his own life in June.

His family formed Team J-Man and raised more than $10,000 for suicide prevention.

This weekend, they held a bake sale and a “Mrs. Doubtfire” challenge in Norfolk. The challenge involved people covering their faces in whipped cream and giving their best Mrs. Doubtfire impersonation.

Team J-Man is one of the top fundraisers in the country for the Out of the Darkness Community Walk. This year’s walk is September 6 at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach.
