PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Police say a worker was trapped Monday morning after an industrial accident in Portsmouth.

Chief Mike Stockton with the Portsmouth Fire Department said the accident happened at Titan America in the 100 block of Chautauqua Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

Stockton said crews found a worker trapped inside an excavator that moves gravel and dirt. The worker was apparently moving a pile of gravel when it collapsed on the front of the excavator, trapping him inside. Stockton said the fire department coordinated the movement of the pile with another excavator, and removed the gravel.

The worker was freed after about 15 minutes, and taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
