NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News police have identified a man who was found shot to death early Sunday in the parking lot of the Apex at Ashton Green apartment complex on the 300 block of Boulder Drive.
Police responded to calls about shots fired around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. One neighbor said he heard one or two shots and then five minutes later, he heard several shots in a row.
“It just gets to the point where you’re numb to it,” said Dan Brown, who said he’s not surprised by the violence in the neighborhood. He said the neighborhood off Warwick Boulevard has many elderly, veterans, and has always been quiet. In the last months, Brown said there have been one too many incidents.
“It’s getting worse,” he said. “It’s not getting any better.”
Officers arrived at the Apex at Ashton Green apartment complex and found the body of 31-year-old David Duke Sims in the driver’s seat of a vehicle. Police said he had been shot.
Court documents state Sims was previously convicted of 2nd degree murder. He was imprisoned from June 2005 to December 2012.
WAVY News 10 crews found spray paint markings on the ground where police had collected evidence earlier in the day. Neighbors pointed out the victim’s vehicle was outlined in spray paint. There were at least 11 evidence markers to the right of the victim’s car.
Police do not have any suspects, but did report a man was seen running from the area.
