Shooting victim charged, 1 suspect arrested, 1 at large

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Police arrested one suspect and continue to search for another after a shooting left one person injured in Hampton back in August 2014.

According to the Hampton Police Division, a call about a shooting came in around 7 p.m. in the 2200 block of Executive Drive.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, officers found 23-year-old Bryers Peeples at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. He was treated and released, but police said as a result of the investigation he was arrested and charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and one count of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Peeples remained in custody at the Hampton City Jail.

Police said the suspects and Peeples, who knew each other, got into a fight when the suspects allegedly displayed guns and shot Peeples. Three apartments were hit by bullets, but police said none of the residents were hurt.

Police identified the suspects as 25-year-old Julius Kinyata Helkstall and 27-year-old Kevin Dwayne Jones. Both Helkstall and Jones have charges for maiming, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied building. Helkstall was also charged for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Helkstall was arrested on March 12, 2015. Jones remains at large.
