Woman won’t be charged for medical records left on curb

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A woman who owns a Virginia Beach wellness center will not be criminally prosecuted for thousands of medical documents she left on a Portsmouth curb.

You may remember 10 On Your Side’s report in May in front of a Portsmouth home Erica Steele was moving out of, at the time. Steele admitted the boxes of her former patients personal information being put outside was a major mistake.

WAVY.com talked to Detective Misty Holley with the Portsmouth Police Department this week, and she said the Commonwealth’s Attorney didn’t find any criminal intent to prosecute Steele.

But, that doesn’t absolve her from civil liability. Individuals whose personal information was exposed could still sue.
