Moped rider killed in 2-vehicle crash identified

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Police have identified a moped rider who was killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon in Chesapeake.

Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department said the accident happened in the 2100 block of Dock Landing Road around 1 p.m. The crash involved a moped and pickup truck.

O’Sullivan said the two vehicles were traveling in opposite lanes of traffic, when the moped turned in front of an oncoming pickup truck.

The moped driver, identified as 57-year-old as Peter Dowson, Jr., was transported to Maryview Hospital with life-threatening injures. At approximately 3:30 p.m., Dowson died at the hospital.

There were no other injuries, and police said the pickup truck driver was found to not be at fault.
