CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A memorial service is planned for a 9-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed at a western Michigan playground.

The service is Wednesday at Cornerstone Church in Kent County’s Caledonia Township. A 12-year-old boy is accused of repeatedly stabbing Michael Connor Verkerke on Aug. 4 in Kentwood, near Grand Rapids. Police say the young victim ran home and collapsed on the porch after the stabbing and died at a hospital.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the boy charged with murder because of his age. He’s designated as an adult in the juvenile court system, which would allow the boy to be sentenced as a juvenile if convicted and then as an adult once he turns 21.

On Monday, a judge ordered a mental competency exam for the 12-year-old.
