HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Six people, including four juveniles, have been arrested in connection with a robbery and carjacking of a 70-year-old man in Hampton on Monday.
According to the Hampton Police Division, officers were called to the 2500 block of Shell Road around 6:30 p.m. Police learned the victim had left his home and gotten into his van when he was approached by multiple suspects. Police said one of the suspects displayed a gun and ordered the man to get out of his vehicle.
“When I was younger, I would have took the gun from him,” said Sylvester Gray, the victim. “I would have took it from him and whipped him with it, not kill him, whip him.“
Gray has strong feelings about the six suspects. Monday, he was leaving his home to run to the store.
“Me and my wife love the lottery,“ Gray said.
He had just sat in his mini-van and started the engine when strangers ran up on either side.
“He tried to get in the passenger side, [but it] was locked,“ Gray said. “The guy with the gun came around to my side. He told me to roll the window down. I wasn’t thinking. I rolled the window down, and then he pulled a gun, he said, ‘get out of the van.’“
Gray said when he saw the gun he got out, and gave one suspect his wallet. Another suspect was screaming out demands.
“He said, ‘get on the ground!’ So, I got on the ground,” Gray said. “He went into my pockets and took the rest of the money out of my pockets. I wasn’t worried about him shooting me, I was worried about him shooting my wife.“
Gray said the teens hopped into the van and sped away.
“I really wasn’t scared,” Gray said. “I just hoped they don’t kill.“
About 20 minutes later, police got a call from a concerned citizen about a group of suspicious people who had fled from a van in the 200 block of Raleigh Avenue. Officers found the vehicle, which turned out to be the victim’s stolen van.
Police quickly apprehended the six suspects, without incident.
18-year-old Taijalon Allen Smith and 18-year-old Demetrius Elijah Estes were both charged with one count of robbery, one count of carjacking, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony. They were both being held at the Hampton Sheriff’s Office.
Two 15-year-olds and two 17-year-old boys were arrested and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, carjacking, robbery, conspiracy to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a juvenile.
According to police, the victim got his van back and he was not hurt.
