NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Norfolk-based USS Mahan left Monday for a five-month deployment.
Hundreds of sailors said “goodbye” to friends, family and other loved ones.
The Navy says the guided missile destroyer is headed to the Mediterranean Sea and then the Persian Gulf. Sailors will conduct maritime operations and help out naval forces from other countries.
Monday’s deployment is USS Mahan’s first since a sailor was shot and killed on the ship at Naval Station Norfolk. Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo was killed when a civilian truck driver, Jeffrey Savage, tried to get on the USS Mahan in March.
