VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A motorcyclist was killed during a crash with an off-duty officer early Friday morning, police say.

Just before 2 a.m. Friday, an off-duty officer was traveling north in the 1200 block of General Booth Boulevard in a 2011 Saab. When he saw on-duty officers investigating a disturbance on the side of the southbound lanes, the officer slowed his vehicle to respect the safety of those on the side of the road.

MPO James Cason with Virginia Beach police said that’s when the officer noticed a speeding vehicle approaching him from behind. He tried to move into the left turn lane, but his vehicle was hit from behind by a 1984 Honda motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Sunday. Cason said he has been identified as 28-year-old Daniel J. Lewis of Virginia Beach.

Investigators say alcohol and speed were factors in this crash. The department is continuing to investigate the incident.
