Groups call out McCrory on NC immigrant children

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Civil rights leaders and immigrant advocates say they’re calling out Gov. Pat McCrory for negatively addressing the plight of an influx of children from Central America now in North Carolina.

The state NAACP, Latino advocacy groups and others scheduled a Friday news conference to respond toMcCrory’s comments this week criticizing the federal government’s management of children who have crossed the Mexican border without an adult.

McCrory said Tuesday the state has received little information about roughly 1,200 children who were relocated with a sponsor in North Carolina. He says the state doesn’t know where they live or whether their sponsors passed true background checks.

The Rev. William Barber says McCrory is trying to play off the fears of state residents and stereotypes about immigrant activities.
