Passenger bus ignites in flames on Rt. 58 West

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk police confirm a large passenger bus caught fire on Route 58 West Thursday evening.

The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of Rt. 58 and Wilroy Road, according to Tim Kelly with Suffolk police. All 47 occupants were all able to exit the bus without injury, and the fire is now under control, Kelly said.

Suffolk’s Fire & Rescue Rehab Bus was used to house the 47 people while they waited for a replacement bus. Kelly said the bus was heading to a 4-H camp in Lake Gaston, N.C.

A wrecker was on scene for about 30 minutes to tow the bus away. During that time, traffic was diverted from Route 58 to Portsmouth Boulevard. All lanes have since reopened.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
