YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) – A Yorktown Wal-Mart has closed three areas related to food preparation after mold was discovered.
The store is located at the intersection of US 17 and Victory Boulevard. A company spokesman told 10 On Your Side the deli, bakery and Subway restaurant inside the Wal-Mart all remain closed until further notice.
Spokesman Brian Nick said the mold was discovered during repairs for a water leak.
“In an abundance of caution, they went ahead and closed the areas of the store that are adjacent to where the mold was discovered, and that included the deli, the bakery, and the Subway,” Nick said.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture has enforcement authority over food preparation areas, such as the ones affected at Wal-Mart. The department said that the store is taking the proper steps to mitigate the mold. The company has hired a mitigation specialist and said the cleanup is ongoing.
Wal-Mart said the mold did not expose customers or workers to any health risks.
“We were able to determine that there was nothing harmful with what was discovered. There’s not a safety issue at this time,” Nick said. “We will make sure with a hundred percent certainty that it’s safe in those areas to re-open. We won’t do it a minute sooner.”
The rest of the store is open and unaffected by the mold.
