HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton man died Tuesday after being ejected from his vehicle during a crash late last month.

On July 27, after receiving multiple 911 calls about a single-vehicle crash around 2 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Easterly Avenue and Langley Avenue, according to Corporal Mary Shackelford with the Hampton Police Division.

Investigators believe a 2013 Chevrolet Impala was heading east on Langley Avenue when it hit a curb and overturned several times. The vehicle caught fire, and the driver, 27-year-old Darrell Anthony Spivey, was ejected from the vehicle.

At the scene, police found Spivey suffering from life-threatening injuries. Responding officers provided Spivey with first aid treatment until Hampton Fire & Rescue crews arrived. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A female passenger of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. She has since been treated and released.

Shackelford said the cause of the crash is still being investigated by the department’s Fatal Crash Team. She said speed does appear to have been a factor.
