Crime Line tips lead to serial robber’s capture

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton police say citizen tips helped them catch a serial robber Monday night.

Officers took 42-year-old Derrick Marcel Barnes of North Carolina into custody, charging him with four counts of burglary, six counts of grand larceny and one count petit larceny.

Barnes’ charges are related to a string of commercial burglaries in Hampton last month. According to Sgt. Jason Price with the Hampton Police Division, Barnes has been connected to the following incidents:

  • July 11 — Mugzy’s Bar and Grill, 1300 block of East Pembroke, electronics and cash stolen
  • July 15 — Hong Kong Restaurant, 600 block of Aberdeen Road, cash and cash register stolen
  • July 18 — Hunan Garden Restaurant, 1900 block of East Pembroke Avenue, cash and cash register stolen
  • July 20 — Golden City Restaurant, 1400 block of East Pembroke Avenue, cash and cash register stolen
  • July 22 — China Jade, 1800 block of Todd’s Lane, cash register stolen
  • July 29 — Old Bay Seafood, 3700 block of Kecoughtan Road, cash stolen
