Portsmouth neighbors react to Cradock shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth police are investigating a shooting incident Friday night in the Cradock neighborhood. A resident who did not want to be identified told 10 On Your Side a young male, possibly a teenager, knocked on her door on Emmons Place about 9:15 p.m. Friday.

“He just said somebody had shot him in his head, and he couldn’t hear,” the woman said. “God was with him last night. At least it didn’t penetrate to where it would have killed him.”

Portsmouth police say when they arrived they found the victim with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. An ambulance took the unidentified victim to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The woman who found the victim at her door last night said the neighborhood is getting more violent.

“You’re talking about people beating up people. There’s a lot of violence going on in Cradock that they don’t even report on,” she said.

Another neighbor says outsiders are to blame.

“I don’t know why but a lot of people do come out there that don’t live out here,” says lifelong Cradock resident, Chrystal Williams. “That’s where a lot of the trouble starts.”

Police have released no further details on the shooting incident. Neighbors say they believe the victim was shot on another street and came to Emmons looking for help.
