NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A Newport News mother is charged with felony child neglect after her son was found wandering the street early Friday morning.
According to Holly McPherson with the Newport News Police Department, officers were called to the area of River Road and North Avenue around 2 a.m. about an unattended child. A five-year-old boy was seen in the street by himself. Police said the boy was fully clothed, and there were no reports that the child had been harmed.
Officers took custody of the child, and started searching for the his parents. After an hour-and-a-half search of the neighborhood, police found the child’s mother inside a residence. Police said 25-year-old Kristy McClemmy was visiting a male friend.
According to police, McClemmy and her son are currently homeless and were living in a detached garage at the friend’s residence on River Road.
McClemmy was charged with felony child neglect and turned over to the Newport News City Jail, where she is being held without bond.
Police said the five-year-old boy was turned over to Child Protective Services.
