NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News detectives are trying to identify a would-be shoplifter after an incident Friday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m., the Asset Protection Officer at the Denbigh area Wal-Mart on Jefferson Avenue notified Newport News police that a man was observed on a security camera concealing items in a shopping cart.

A detective responded and approached the suspect, asking him to provide a receipt for the items concealed in shopping bags. The suspect was unable to do so, so the detective took the items and asked the suspect to go to the Asset Protection Office.

Police say a struggle began when the detective told the suspect he was under arrest for concealment of merchandise. The suspect got away. Police say the suspect removed his clothing as he ran toward the Thrift Inn.

Detectives are asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect. If you recognize him, please call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
