VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Rescue crews in Virginia Beach have suspended their search in the northern end of the Oceanfront after someone reported seeing a body Thursday night.
Around 8:30 p.m., someone on a dolphin cruise about 1500 feet off shore said she possibly saw a body floating in the water. Crews are searching between 78th Street and Cape Henry, according to Ed Brazzle with Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service.
Crews searched for over an hour from 70th Street to the lighthouse and from the shoreline to about 2,000 feet off shore. They saw no signs of a body.
Brazzle said there were no other people aboard the the dolphin cruise who saw a body. He said there are also no reports of missing swimmers, boaters or fisherman in the area.
“So, at this point, we [were] just doing our due diligence,” Brazzle said. “We [had] boats from the department EMS, fire department, police department, doing a search pattern.”
The Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service will continue to monitor the area Friday, but all active search efforts have ended for the night.
